San Rocco chapel

19 / 26

The chapel of San Rocco was built after the great plague of 1630 in an artisanal way by local farmers who were enthusiastic about having survived the great epidemic. Towards the end of 1600 it was declared unsafe and its use was discouraged. In 1713, in a session of the city council, the mayor Carlo Abellonio denounced the danger of collapse. His successor Filippo Rinaldi urged its repair. Money collections were organized in the village to be able to carry out the reconstruction which ended in 1719 after 4 years of work. There is also a painting of San Rocco whose origin is unknown, recently restored. The villagers of Borgo Lopiano and Strada S.Croce have always had great celebrations in the week of August 16th, the feast of San Rocco.
