"Dei Sorì" municipal wine shop
24 / 26
This building, elegant and centrally located in the town, was originally a private home and has then been the house of many associations and organizations: the teaching management and classrooms, the police barracks, the musical band, the Pro Loco, the Tourist Office and now the Sorì Municipal Enoteca
SCHOOL VENUE
In 1877 the Minister of Public Education of Alba, Professor Michele Coppino, with Royal Decree had made primary school compulsory up to the age of 9 and from this moment on all the municipal administrations of Diano had the task of finding classrooms suitable for teaching. In 1922, while the problem of finding a suitable place to build a school building was being discussed, the opportunity arose to purchase this building from the recently deceased knight Berzia Pietro. However, the construction will soon prove insufficient to accommodate all the classrooms and the shape of the building was not suitable for an expansion.
CARABINIERI BARRACKS
In 1958 the building was used as the Carabinieri barracks, while the construction of a new school building in Piazza Ravinale was decided.
This place has been an important landmark for the Dianese community and the entire surrounding area up until 1987, when the Carabinieri barracks were moved to the new premises in Strada Montelupo, in a much larger location and with the possibility of dedicated accommodation spaces.
MUNICIPAL WINE SHOP
On 6 December 1999, the "Cantina Comunale dei Sorì" was born in the cellars of this building, a permanent shop for tasting and buying typical products and wines, in particular the Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba, soon becoming a landmark for local food and wine tourism with the participation of the majority of the country's wineries. Every year, in autumn, it is also the starting and finishing point of the food and wine festival "Di sorì In sorì", an enogastronomic itinerary among the wineries that allows participants to discover the Dolcetto of Diano d'Alba while admiring enchanting views.
The marketing and promotional activities of the local "Dolcetto" wine was first launched in 1963, with the great commercial exhibition in Piazza Trento Trieste where some wine producers had set up special stands to present their companies.
The first official achievements arrived on May 3rd, 1974, with the recognition of the D.O.C. (controlled designation of origin), and this hard work continued and finally on August 2nd, 2010 the Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba finally obtained the status of D.O.C.G (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin).
On September 27th 1986, the map of the areas of the municipality of Diano was displayed on the official billboard for the attribution of the denomination of the vineyard. For the first time in Italy a municipality was equipped with a cutting-edge urban planning tool in agricultural matters.
The "Sorì" were created to indicate the lands most exposed to the sun and therefore particularly suited for the cultivation of vines, easily identifiable because the snow immediately melts even with the slightest ray of sunshine, therefore making it unique for their terrain composition and microclimate.
