Nuns' Palace

9 / 26

This building is still called "Nuns' Palace" even if, after its renovation, it is used as the city primary school and as the teaching management central offices, while some rooms are used for different services. The current library, in the past, housed the small "Don Bosco" hospital which provided first aid interventions and treatments to the people of Diano. The hospital rooms occupied the premises where the Diano musical band is currently based.

In 1890 Don Giuseppe Falletti arrived in Diano D'Alba and was its parish priest for 56 years and was always convinced that, for the good of the village, the presence of the nuns was necessary. On September 24, 1897, four nuns arrived from the "Suore Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice" congregation. They found temporary accommodation on the top floor of the town hall and took charge of managing the kindergarten.

The congregation later purchased two houses in Piazza Ravinale that were then demolished so that the "Palazzo delle Suore" could be built, becoming the official headquarters of the congregation.

The Nuns' Palace was inaugurated in 1907 and was the home for 18 nuns who ran a small hospital, an emergency room, a kindergarten, two classrooms, a large theater and numerous service rooms.

In 1910 the first short film in the cinematographic history of Diano was screened in the nuns' theater. They also opened a sewing school for the girls of the town, working hard for our Dianese missionaries around the world. The structure closed on September 7th, 1986 due to a lack of vocations, leaving a great void in the village.
