"Usat", the small door to the Castle

The secondary road is a service passage to access the Castle without passing through the drawbridge. It was also considered an emergency exit. From the end of this secondary road it was possible to access the Castle without crossing the water canal. In the stone wall that surrounded the village there was a small door (in Piedmontese dialect "usat") with a very steep road called "scarun". These locations in Diano still retain their original names.

In 1632 the castle was demolished and later this part of the wall with the small access door was also demolished. Access to the "Scarun" slope which led to Borgo Castellero was therefore free.

According to some historical reconstructions, probably linked to legends, there was a third emergency exit consisting of an underpass that connected the castle's basement with Borgo Remondato.

The medieval access road to the castle currently partly overlaps Via San Sebastiano, right above the fortresses of Santa Lucia. After the "Usat" the road continued to the right above the Tunnel in the current Via delle Cisterne to arrive at the Drawbridge near today's Unione Agricola.

THE STAIRCASE

These stairs were built in the mid-1800s at the same time as the construction of the tunnel as an accessory work and connection with the ancient road.
